YEAR 5 and 6 CLASSES:

Flame, Gingko and Trumpet

YEAR 6 RESIDENTIAL 2023
The Year 6s have just experienced their 2023 residential and have had a great time participating in all the different activities. Despite Storm Babet causing chaos around the country, we were remarkably lucky to avoid the worst of it.

Arriving on the Monday morning of the 16th October, the children were acquainted with their rooms for the week before meeting the instructors and taking part in the team building activities. In the evening, the children embarked on a 4km walk across the moors, braving the wind as they went!

Tuesday was a day spent on the site at Adventure Okehampton, where the children took part in axe throwing, the climbing wall and the high ropes.

Wednesday was lake day and the day we were expecting Storm Babet to make landfall and possibly divert our plans. Luckily, the wind and rain never arrived at the lake and the children were able to canoe and make life rafts without any interference from the weather.

Thursday was a day of cycling and gorge scrambling at Meldon. Although the weather was punctuated by heavy showers, this didn't dampen the children's spirits as they cycled to the site and donned their wetsuits once again. On Thursday evening, Demelza led the school disco before the children headed to bed for the last night of residential.

On Friday, the children took part in the activities that they didn't get the chance to do on Monday before heading to the coach at 13:00 to return to school.

All in all, the children had a great time and took part in many different activities that they can add to their Grove 100 passports.
Paignton Zoo
Zoo Visit

On Monday 18th September, years 5 and 6 had the opportunity to visit Paignton Zoo as part of the zoo's centenary celebrations. Luckily, the storms on the previous day hadn't caused too much damage and the rain stayed away. The children enjoyed visiting the resident red pandas, lions, tigers and giraffes - to no name just a few animals!
  • Victorian Day
  • Tuesday 26th September
In English this term, the children will be focusing on honing their non-fiction writing skills. To complement our science project on 'Earth and Space', the children will be writing a report text based on planets of their own creation.

We're sure the ideas will be out of this world!

In mathematics this half-term, we will be completing our teaching sequence on addition and subtraction. This will include carrying out calculations using addition and subtraction using formal written methods as well as mental methods. Additionally, children will use these methods to solve problems in context (including written word problems and multi-step problems) along with checking calculations using inverse operations.

Later in the half term, as Christmas approaches, the children will begin the sequence on multiplication and division. This will include the following elements:

- multiplying numbers by one and two digits (short and long multiplication)
- dividing numbers by one digit numbers (short division, bus stop method)
- dividing numbers by two digit numbers (long division - year 6)
- factors of numbers
- multiples of numbers
- common factors and common multiplies
- word problems (including multi-step) based on all the elements above.

Next Steps: once the children have completed the sequences based on the four operations above, they will then apply these skills to fractions later in the term.

Geography
Our geography topic this half-term will based on our capital city - London. This will include looking at city planning and the way in which towns and cities are often set out. The children will get to explore the significance of the Burgess and Hoyt models of cities and become acquainted with terms such as CBD (Central Business District). This will entail investigating the types of building that might be found in different parts of a town or city and where they are positioned and why. Additionally, the children will explore the different landmarks that can be found in London and research information about them. The children will also look at significant features such as The Thames Barrier and investigate its purpose.

In terms of retrieval practice, children will look at the meaning of, and differences between, physical and human geography - a thread that runs through all geography teaching here at The Grove.
Earth and Space will be the area of study in our science lessons this half-term, allowing the children to gain an understanding of the wider universe around them. This will include carrying out scientific investigations, such as measuring the length and movement of shadows to better understand how the earth, moon and sun move in relation to one another. In addition to this, the children will learn more about the solar system itself and the planetary bodies within.

As part of our science curriculum at The Grove, the children will also have the opportunity to learn about a diverse range of famous scientists and the contributions they have made to science.
Lowry
Considering we are studying Victorian Britain as our overarching history topic this half-term, it seemed only right that we study the work of one of the most famous artists of the time - L.S. Lowry.

At the beginning of the sequence, the children will experiment with mixing primary colours, creating both secondary and tertiary colours. They will also work with different tones and shades when using black and white.

Towards the end of the sequence, the children will then get to produce their very own versions of a Lowry style Victorian Totnes. Watch this space for their creations later in the term!
Formerly known as PSHE, here at The Grove, PSHME (Personal, Social, Health, Mental, Economic) looks at a wide range of topics that address the modern world our children live in today. Unlike other subjects, PSHME here differs in that the pupils are mixed with children from the other year 5/6 classes to give them the opportunity to share views and opinions with children they don't usually learn with on a day-to-day basis. As part of one of three groups, each child will visit each year 5/6 teacher on a three week rotation. Below are the talking points for this half-term.

  • How people make decisions about spending and saving money and what influences them
  • How to keep track of money so people know how much they have to spend or save

  • How people make choices about ways of paying for things they want and need (eg from current accounts / savings; store cards / credit cards; loans).

  • How to recognise what makes something ‘value for money’ and what this means to them
  • That there are risks associated with money (it can be won, lost or stolen) and how money can affect people’s feelings and emotions

Religious Education (R.E.)
Following our topic on Hinduism in the last half-term, the children will be looking at Christianity once again while asking the question, 'What kind of king was Jesus?'
This unit will be about trying to transform the world, discussing and debating what a better world would be like. This will also include gathering ideas about contemporary world issues which, of course, there are a great many.

Additionally, the children will also find out about some of the people who have made a difference to the world (e.g. have a look at winners of the Nobel Peace Prize or the Niwano Peace Prize), listing ways in which people could make the world they live in a better place in the next 50 years.
