History at The Grove
Aim - why we teach history?
History gives us a sense of where we've come from and where we're going. This helps children to gain a chronological understanding of their country, culture and themselves. Children see how the past influences the present and, ultimately, the future. Comparisons to previous time periods allow children to understand how their lives have been shaped over time.
Intent - what we teach?
We cover a range of historical periods and topics and we often use history as a hook into our more cross curricular learning. We compare past with present and look at the effects of events on our world today. We look at how historical theories are reached and why they vary. We increase knowledge and understanding about events over the world's history.
These are a few of the periods of history or significant events we investigate:
- history of flying
- history of holidays
- kings and queens
- history of homes and houses
- local history of Totnes and Dartmoor
- children in war
- Ancient Egypt
- early Islamic civilization
- Ancient Greece
- Stone Age to the Iron Age
